How To Choose A Maid of Honor
Picking a relative can sometimes be the best choice for a maid of honor. Other times a very close friend can be the right choice. Sometimes even choosing someone who you are only moderately close to can be the right choice if you want someone who won’t influence your decisions. Even Man of Honors are becoming more and more popular. Here’s a few suggestions
1.) Best Friend – Of course this could be your first choice. Someone you have known since childhood would be an ideal choice for a maid of honor. You could also pick someone who you’ve known since high school or college or even a sorority sister. The best would be to pick the best friend who set you up with the man you are about to marry. Whichever she is, she will be by far the most supportive of your marriage. If she has been married before, that’ll make it an even better choice
2.) Sister – Do you have an older sister that you always looked up to? Or maybe a younger sister who always looked up to you? Sometimes your sister can be the best choice if you are closer to your sister than any of your best friends. Just remember that with family can sometimes come controversy. If she is pushy or wants to “make it her own wedding” you might reconsider.
3.) A close friend – it’s possible that you don’t want to ruin your friendship with your best friend by making her your maid of honor. Often times with weddings it can put a real strain on your relationship with your friends. If you know for sure you are going to get moody and angry if she doesn’t agree with you 100% of the time, then maybe a close friend would be a better choice. Just make sure if you are going to pick someone else other than your very best friend that she is okay with your choice.
4.) A cousin or other close family member – for those of us who don’t have sisters, sometimes another close family member might be like a sister to you. Many people have cousins or someone else that they spent their entire childhood with. If she is as close to you as a sister, then don’t hesitate to choose her.
5.) A man of honor – some of you might be thinking this is a bit odd. We’ll you’ll definitely have to pick someone who is secure in their masculinity. This has been more popularized by wedding movies, however this can be a real scenario. Sometimes your very best friend is a man. Or possibly if you don’t have any sisters, you might have a brother who can be the man of honor. If you decide to go this route, don’t let anyone judge you. It’s your wedding. Make sure you are going to do what is going to make you happy.
