Maid of Honor Speech Do Nots

1.) Avoid talking too fast

- Try to talk at a normal pace.  You don’t want to talk overly quickly, but you don’t want to sound like a robot either.  Trying to go with a normal tone of voice at a normal speed is your best bet

2.)Do not only look at the wedding party.

- Make sure to look around at the audience.  If you are too afraid to look them in the eye, then look at the top of their heads.

3.)Do not stand up and give your speech on they fly.

- Practice makes perfect.  Keep practicing until you are comfortable giving your speech even if you forget your note cards.

4.)Do not slouch, frown, or fold your arms.

- Use hand gestures if it helps.  You want to make sure you look happy to be there and happy to be giving the speech.  Crossing your arms is going to give completely the wrong impression.  Slouching could make it so that you appear not serious

5.)Do not read from your notes

- Attempt to memorize the maid of honor speech if possible

6.)Avoid ex-boyfriend or ex-fiancé stories.

- Do you want to lose your friend?  If not avoid embarrassing her on her wedding day.

7.)Avoid the bachelorette party

- What happened at her bachelorette party needs to stay there.  The bachelorette party is a secret.  Never mention it.  To anyone!

8.)Do not only talk about the bride.

-  Mention the groom too.  Feel free to embarrass him.

9.)Avoid childhood stories

- You need to tell a story about both the bride and groom if possible, or at least explain how you know the bride.

10.)Do not get overly nervous

- Pauses and stopping to take a deep breath can release some of the nervousness.  What seems like an eternity of silence to you is really only half a second or so to the audience.
